Texas Police Officer Killed In Dallas Shooting

A Texas police officer was killed and two others after shootings in Dallas according to the city’s police department.
In a statement provided to Newsweek, the Dallas Police Department said it “responded to an officer in distress in the 900 block of East Ledbetter Drive” at 10:10 p.m. CDT on Thursday. When reinforcements arrived at the scene they found one officer who had been shot in a marked police car.
Officers at the scene subsequently exchanged fire with a suspect during which two were injured.
All three officers were taken to local hospitals where one was pronounced dead, with another in a critical condition and the third in a stable condition. Citing multiple police officials, The Dallas Morning News reported the deceased officer had been taken to Methodist hospital.
It is unclear if the deceased officer is the one who was found shot in a police car following the initial distress call.
Police chased the suspect in a vehicle to Lewisville in the 1000 block of Stemmons Freeway where they were shot dead.
The statement said: “The preliminary investigation determined the suspect got out of the vehicle with a long gun and was shot by Dallas Police officers and he died at the scene.
“The investigation is ongoing. Flags at all city facilities will be flown at half-staff.”
On X, formerly known as Twitter, Dallas Morning News reporter Kelli Smith shared a photograph on X at around 1:26 a.m. CDT showing a large number of police officers gathered on foot outside Methodist hospital.
She wrote: “Dozens of Dallas police officers are standing quietly in two parallel lines outside the emergency room entrance of Methodist hospital, where one of the officers had been taken. The honor guard is at the entrance.”
In a statement posted on Facebook, the Lewisville Police Department said: “Dallas PD was involved in a vehicle pursuit, northbound IH-35 just north of Business 121. Shots were fired, and the suspect is deceased. Dallas PD is leading the investigating. No Lewisville PD personnel were involved.
“The highway will be closed for an extended period of time. Please seek alternate routes.”
Newsweek contacted the Dallas City Hall for comment on Friday by telephone and email outside of regular business hours.
In an unrelated incident, on Monday Muna Pandey, a 21-year-old Houston Community College nursing student from Nepal, was found shot dead at her home in the city.
Police later arrested 52-year-old Bobby Sinh Shah over the incident and booked him into the Harris County Jail on a capitol murder charge.
Also on Monday Rice University student 21-year-old Andrea Rodriguez Avila was discovered in her room at Jones College in Houston by police having been fatally shot.
Police found the body of a 22-year-old man with a self-inflicted gunshot wound nearby in what they said was a murder-suicide case.
University police chief Clemente Rodriguez reported the pair had been in a “troubled relationship” prior to the shooting.
Speaking to Newsweek, a Rice University spokesperson said: “Andrea’s family arrived in Houston Tuesday morning and is receiving support from the university’s leadership team during this profoundly challenging time.
“They have requested privacy as they mourn their loss but are deeply appreciative of the outpouring of thoughts and prayers from the community.”
